My son has a December Birthday. Making it a special day for him has been challenging over the years. We’ve celebrated it as early as Thanksgiving weekend just to make sure we could get it in.
Add in the fact I hate to ask anyone for anything. It stresses me out just to think about asking friends and family to add one more party to their already busy schedule. And buying one more gift from their tight December budget. I would have nightmares about planning a huge party and spending big money and no one being able to show up.
So three years ago I changed the way we did things. Now his Birthday is fun, special, and stress-free.

Make December Birthdays Magical
We still decorate.
On the eve of his birthday, I am blowing up balloons and hanging up streamers. I make a huge Happy Birthday Banner to hang up. Things that cost maybe $5 total.
He feels the excitement of his day as soon as he wakes up and sees it.
He gets to choose his favorite breakfast. You know, the one I never want to make early in the morning. With the extra whipped cream of course.
The same goes for lunch and dinner. He picks his favorite meals for the day. Don’t worry, they’re not all piled with whipped cream and chocolate.
How we spend the day
This depends on the day of the week his Birthday falls on and the weather. If his birthday is on a weekday we do stuff at home, and you may be in the part of December where they are in school too.
In the past when we had a good snow we went sledding. One year we stayed in and played his favorite games, painted, popped some popcorn and watched some favorite movies.
Pretty much it’s his one day to call all the shots, with in reason. I’m not stressing about getting the house clean for party guests, so he gets our full undivided attention to play along with all day. And he loves it. Every second of it.
Make it a “yes day” to as many of their requests as you can.
In addition to that, on the following Saturday, he gets to pick a fun place to go and one friend to come along with. So far every year one friend has been able to come along. It may not have been his first choice BFF, but by limiting it to one we are pretty much guaranteed to find someone who doesn’t have a Christmas party to go to that day.
This will be our 4th year going to Chucky Cheese. Sigh. The good thing is you can totally do a birthday at Chucky Cheese without having to pay for their party prices. I get one pizza, a boatload of coins and they have hours of fun.
Gifts
He gets one gift from mom and dad, a gift from sis, and a gift from Grandma and Grandpa on his Birthday. I try to make it something he reeaaaallly wants. I’m not letting Santa get credit for a good gift lol.
And he’s totally happy with it.
And I’m over the moon ecstatic. Getting a bunch of gifts at a Birthday party and then turning around a week or so later and getting a bunch more for Christmas I think is stressful to even them. Less is more and quality over quantity.
Little things.
To sum it up, it’s the little things and the quality time that makes the day special for them. Just relax and have fun with your birthday boy or girl.
How about you? What ways do you make December birthdays extra special for your kids? I’ve wondered what different parents do for their kiddos that were born on the 25th. The most common around here is opting to celebrate half birthdays instead.
